Under the guidance of their Agriculture and Nutrition teacher, Grade 8 learners at Sun and Shield Primary and Junior School engaged in a hands-on poultry processing project as part of the KNEC Agriculture and Nutrition practicals. The exercise began with the beheading of the chicken, a critical initial step to ensure humane and hygienic processing. Learners, fully equipped with aprons and protective gear, carefully followed each procedure, demonstrating a deep sense of responsibility and maturity throughout the activity.
Following beheading, the pupils moved on to defeathering and singeing the chickens to remove any remaining feathers and sanitize the skin. They remained actively engaged, gaining a strong understanding of the importance of cleanliness and hygiene, particularly in food processing. With focus and enthusiasm, the learners took turns washing the carcasses thoroughly, preparing them for cooking while strictly adhering to safety protocols and food handling practices.
The session concluded with the cooking phase, where learners collaborated to prepare various chicken dishes, applying both theoretical and practical knowledge from their Agriculture and Nutrition lessons. This project not only enhanced their culinary skills but also fostered teamwork, confidence, and a clear understanding of farm-to-table processes.
The Agriculture and Nutrition department commends the learners’ outstanding performance and dedication to experiential learning—truly embodying the CBC vision of nurturing competent, practical learners.
